You updated the email address on your Apple Account, and now a passkey you saved on your iPhone is nowhere to be found on your iPad. The stomach-drop is understandable, because passkeys are how you log in now, and it looks like they are gone. Here is the reassuring truth: they are not. An encrypted copy of your passkeys lives safely on Apple’s servers, and changing your account email made both devices re-verify who they are, which pauses syncing until they finish. Get both signed in cleanly on the new email, confirm one setting, and the passkeys flow back. Here is the fix, step by step.

This is specifically the after-an-email-change case. If your passkeys stopped working for a different reason, like an iOS update or a reset toggle, our roundup of common iPhone passkey login problems covers those. For the email change, work through the steps below in order.

Why changing your email pauses the sync

Passkeys on Apple devices sync through iCloud Keychain, which keeps your passkeys and passwords matched across every device signed into the same Apple Account. When you change the email on that account, you have essentially renamed the account, so each device has to sign in again with the new address before it is trusted to sync. Until both your iPhone and your iPad have re-verified on the new email, they can drift out of sync, and a passkey saved on one may not appear on the other. Nothing is deleted; the pipe between the two devices is just closed until they reconnect.

When the two devices show different things, it is usually a sign-in mismatch, not lost data. Line them up on the same account.

    1. Confirm both devices are on the new account

Start here, because a mismatch is the most common cause. On each device open Settings and tap your name at the top, then check the email listed under it. Both your iPhone and iPad must show the same Apple Account with the new email. If one still shows the old address, or is signed out, sign it in with the new email. Once both devices agree on the same account, the two halves of the sync can find each other again.

    2. Turn on iCloud Passwords and Keychain sync

With both devices on the right account, make sure the sync itself is switched on. On each device, go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and confirm Passwords, sometimes shown as Passwords and Keychain, is turned on. Apple’s guide to setting up iCloud Keychain walks through where the toggle lives on the current version. Your Apple Account also needs two-factor authentication enabled, since passkey syncing depends on it. Flip the setting on for both devices and give them a moment to connect.

Check the sync toggle on the iPad too, not just the iPhone. Both ends have to be turned on for passkeys to match.

    3. If you signed out, choose Keep, not Delete

Signing out of iCloud during an account change is where people lose their nerve. When you sign out with Keychain on, the device asks whether to keep or delete your passwords and passkeys. Choose Keep. Even if you slipped and chose delete, the encrypted copy on Apple’s servers is untouched, so turning iCloud Keychain back on downloads your passkeys again. The local copy coming or going does not put the real thing at risk; the account copy is what matters, and re-enabling the sync restores it.

    4. Give it time, on Wi-Fi and unlocked

Syncing is not instant, especially right after an account change. Put both devices on a solid Wi-Fi connection, keep each one unlocked for a few minutes, and make sure each has a passcode or Face ID set, since Keychain will not sync to a device with no lock. A passkey you add on the iPhone can take a little while to appear on the iPad. Resist the urge to keep toggling settings mid-sync; give it a genuine window to catch up before you decide it is stuck.

    5. If it still will not sync, reset the connection

When the basics check out and it still lags, nudge the sync. On the device missing the passkeys, turn the iCloud Passwords or Keychain toggle off, wait a moment, and turn it back on, choosing Keep if prompted. A restart of both devices clears temporary states that can stall syncing. As a last resort, sign out of iCloud on the affected device and back in with the new email, again choosing Keep for your Keychain, which forces a fresh, clean connection to the account copy of your passkeys.

Your passkeys are safe the whole time

The point worth holding onto is that changing your email does not erase your passkeys. They are stored encrypted on Apple’s servers, tied to your account rather than to one phone, and recovering them only requires signing in on the new email with two-factor authentication and your device passcode. The sync can look broken for a few anxious minutes, but the credentials themselves are sitting safely in your account, waiting for both devices to re-verify and pull them back down.

This is general guidance, not security advice, and Apple’s menu names and steps change between iOS and iPadOS versions, so confirm the current wording in Settings and Apple’s support pages. Never share your Apple Account password, two-factor codes, or recovery details with anyone, and keep two-factor authentication turned on.

    What To Know

    • Changing your Apple Account email pauses passkey syncing until both devices re-verify on the new email; nothing is deleted.
    • Confirm both iPhone and iPad show the same new Apple Account under Settings, then turn on iCloud Passwords and Keychain on each.
    • Two-factor authentication must be on, and each device needs a passcode or Face ID for Keychain to sync.
    • If you sign out, choose Keep; even a Delete leaves the encrypted copy on Apple’s servers, which re-downloads when you re-enable Keychain.
    • Give sync a few minutes on Wi-Fi before toggling the setting, restarting, or signing out and back in.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Did changing my Apple Account email delete my passkeys?

No. Your passkeys are stored as an encrypted copy on Apple’s servers, tied to your account rather than to a single device. Changing your email does not delete them; it just makes each device re-verify on the new address, which pauses syncing until they do. Once both your iPhone and iPad are signed in with the new email and iCloud Keychain is on, the passkeys sync back automatically.

How do I make passkeys sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Sign both devices into the same Apple Account, then turn on iCloud Passwords and Keychain on each under Settings, your name, then iCloud. Make sure two-factor authentication is enabled and each device has a passcode or Face ID, since Keychain will not sync without a lock. Give the devices a few minutes on Wi-Fi, and a passkey saved on one should appear on the other.

I chose Delete when signing out of iCloud. Are my passkeys gone?

Almost certainly not. Choosing Delete removes the local copy from that device, but the encrypted copy on Apple’s servers stays intact. When you turn iCloud Keychain back on and sign in with two-factor authentication and your device passcode, your passkeys download to the device again. The account copy is the one that matters, and a local delete does not touch it.

Why do my iPhone and iPad show different passkeys?

That mismatch almost always means the two devices are not fully synced, usually because one is on the old email, one has Keychain sync off, or the sync has not caught up after the account change. Confirm both are on the same new Apple Account, both have iCloud Passwords and Keychain turned on, and both are unlocked on Wi-Fi. Once those line up, the passkey lists on the two devices should match.

Do I need two-factor authentication for passkeys to sync?

Yes. Apple requires two-factor authentication on your Apple Account for iCloud Keychain, which is what syncs your passkeys across devices. If two-factor is off, turn it on in Settings under your name, then Sign-In and Security. Without it, passkeys will not sync between your iPhone and iPad, so enabling it is a required step, not an optional one.

    What To Do Next

Check that both devices show the same new Apple Account, switch on iCloud Passwords and Keychain on each, and confirm two-factor authentication is on. Give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi, and toggle the setting or restart only if it stalls. Your passkeys are safe on your account the whole time.
